BASTARD!! 〜暗黒の破壊神〜 — Three Volumes, Three Booklets, a Production Archive in Each

Pioneer LDC / 週刊少年ジャンプVideo CAV Vol.1, CLV Vols.2–3 (PILA-1149–1151) 1992-08-25

BASTARD!! 〜暗黒の破壊神〜. Three volumes. Pioneer LDC / 週刊少年ジャンプVideo. PILA-1149, PILA-1150, PILA-1151. August 1992 through February 1993. ¥7,800 per volume. Each disc carries two episodes across two sides. Director: 秋山勝仁 Katsuhito Akiyama. Character design: 北爪宏幸 Hiroyuki Kitazume. Studio: AIC. Music: 田中公平 Kohei Tanaka. Original manga: 萩原一至 Kazushi Hagiwara, serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1988.

Vol.1 was pressed as CAV — Constant Angular Velocity, 30 minutes per side, individual frames accessible by chapter stop. The back cover lists twenty chapter stops across the two sides, each keyed to a named dramatic moment. Volumes 2 and 3 switched to CLV.

Inside each sleeve: a booklet. Consistent in structure across all three volumes, labeled ALL ABOUT BASTARD!! WORLD with a Roman numeral matching the volume. Each booklet runs two halves: Part A covers color cel reproductions and written comments from the voice cast. Part B is monochrome — settei sheets and a staff interview. Three volumes, six booklet sections: Vol.1 documents character designer Kitazume and director Akiyama; Vol.2 covers art director 池田繁美 Shigemi Ikeda and color designer 中山久美子 Kumiko Nakayama; Vol.3 documents the jacket illustration creation and the Great Bastard!! Exhibition. Hagiwara's manga is known for naming its characters and locations after heavy metal bands — the practice runs through the OVA's visual presentation without acknowledgment or explanation, the in-world vocabulary entirely self-contained.

The Booklet

Each of the three volumes includes a booklet structured in two halves. Part A — CEL WORK ILLUSTRATION & WORDS OF CHARACTER VOICE — carries color reproductions of production cels alongside written comments from the voice cast. Part B — MONOCHROME FILE & STAFF INTERVIEW — carries line-art settei sheets and a text interview with one or two production staff members. Three volumes: three pairs of booklet sections. The subject shifts with each volume: Vol.1 documents character designer 北爪宏幸 and director 秋山勝仁; Vol.2 covers art director 池田繁美 and color designer 中山久美子; Vol.3 turns to the jacket illustration series and documents the 大バスタード!!博覧会 fan exhibition organized around the completed OVA.

Vol.1: CAV

Vol.1 was pressed as CAV — Constant Angular Velocity, 30 minutes per side. Individual frames are accessible by chapter stop. The back cover lists ten chapter stops for Side 1 and ten for Side 2, each named for a specific moment in the episode: characters named, confrontations marked, entrances catalogued. Volumes 2 and 3 switched to CLV. The format difference isn't documented in the packaging; it appears only in the technical specification line at the bottom of each back cover. The practical consequence: episodes 1 and 2 are the only ones in the series where Kitazume's animation is accessible frame by frame.

Vol.2 booklet — color illustration spreads, six panels. Arshes Nei close-ups, battle sequences from episodes 3–4, and character group arrangements. The illustration register consistent with Vol.1. Vol.3

Vol.3's booklet III-A departs from the per-volume staff interview format. Under the heading VIDEO JACKET ILLUSTRATION & THE GREAT BASTARD!! EXHIBITION-1, it reproduces all six episode jacket illustrations in sequence — numbered 1 through 6, each with the corresponding LD cover art and commentary. Alongside them: a photo and interview documenting the 大バスタード!!博覧会, a fan exhibition organized in connection with the completed series. The final volume's booklet looks back at the series as a finished object rather than documenting the production of its own two episodes.

Vol.3 booklet — color illustration spreads. Six panels covering episodes 5–6: Arshes Nei, Abigail close-ups, and the full cast assembled for the series finale compositions. The Pioneer DVD release (PIBA-1030, 1999) collected all six episodes onto a single disc. No booklets. The eighteen sections of the three ALL ABOUT BASTARD!! WORLD booklets — cel reproductions, voice actor comments, character settei, background boards, color references, staff interviews, jacket illustration documentation, exhibition reporting — appear in the LaserDisc volumes and have no known subsequent release. The twenty chapter stops from Vol.1's CAV pressing, keyed to specific moments across episodes 1 and 2, do not carry over to CLV or digital formats.
