餓狼伝説 THE MOTION PICTURE — Masami Obari, Director

Pony Canyon CLV (PCLE-00016) 1994

餓狼伝説 THE MOTION PICTURE, Pony Canyon PCLE-00016. Single CLV disc, approximately 95 minutes. Retail: ¥5,800 (税込). Contents: one disc, a 4-page full-color booklet (場面別バトル・チャプター chapter index, hero profiles, villain profiles, full production credits), and on-disc video supplements — theatrical teaser, full trailer, and TV spot compilation. The front jacket is a new Masami Obari illustration drawn specifically for this release, separate from the theatrical poster.

Terry Bogard and the South Town fighters from SNK's 1991 arcade series were given a different kind of story for the film: not a tournament but a global chase, routing through Turkey, Egypt, Greece, and India after Sulia Gaudeamus's twin brother begins assembling the ancient Armor of Mars. Shochiku distributed it theatrically in July 1994 under a co-production with SNK, Fuji TV, and A·I. On the two preceding TV specials — Battle Fighters: Garou Densetsu (1992) and Garou Densetsu 2 (1993), both on King Records — Obari was character designer. On PCLE-00016, Pony Canyon held the home video rights and Obari held the directing credit.

The Booklet

The 4-page insert opens with a world map titled 場面別バトル・チャプター — the film's chapter structure laid out as geography. Turkey, Egypt, India, Greece: each location anchors a chapter stop on the disc. The fighting tournament bracket of the games is absent entirely; the booklet is organized around an atlas instead. Below the map, the chapter list runs to roughly 50 entries across both sides.

Two Labels, One Franchise

King Records held home video rights to both preceding TV specials — Battle Fighters: Garou Densetsu and Garou Densetsu 2 (KILA92/93, CLV 3-sides, 119 minutes combined). Pony Canyon held the theatrical film. The two releases sit on different labels, different catalog series, from rights chains that split when the production scale escalated from TV broadcast to theatrical distribution.

The 2003 Japanese DVD (Marvelous Entertainment MJBD-70145) modified a Kim Kaphwan animation sequence for photosensitivity compliance. The Pony Canyon LD carries the theatrical cut without that alteration — the same version Discotek sourced for the 2017 Blu-ray, the only domestic HD release. No Japanese Blu-ray edition exists. PCLE-00016 holds the unmodified domestic master.
