GOLDEN BOY さすらいのお勉強野郎. Six volumes. KSS Films, KSS Super Video. JSLA-22666 through JSLA-22671. October 27, 1995 through June 28, 1996. ¥5,800 per volume. Each disc carries one episode (~30 minutes) on Side A and a 17-minute making-of feature on Side B. Director: 北久保弘之 Hiroyuki Kitakubo. Animation character design: 川元利浩 Toshihiro Kawamoto. Studio: A.P.P.P. Original story: 江川達也 Tatsuya Egawa.
Inside each sleeve, volumes 2 through 6: a two-sided insert and a postcard. One face is a color illustration by Egawa of that episode's heroine — named in cursive script, drawn in his Super Jump line-and-color style. The reverse is a settei sheet by Kawamoto, printed in a single ink color that varies by volume: coral-red for volume 2, blue for volumes 3 and 4, brown for volume 5, green for volume 6. Each settei carries 'NOT FOR SALE' at the lower right. The Vol.1 first pressing came with an outer slipcase and two complete-cast inserts — an Egawa color illustration of all six heroines and a lavender Kawamoto settei covering the full cast.
Kintaro Ooe is 25, a dropout from Tokyo University's law department. He travels Japan by bicycle, taking whatever odd work presents itself. Each of the six episodes pairs him with a different woman — at a software company, at a noodle shop, at a swimming pool — following the same structure: obsession, catastrophe, secret genius, departure. Egawa serialized the manga in Shueisha's Super Jump from 1992. The OVA was produced at A.P.P.P. and released direct to home video across eight months.
The Collector's Box
The Vol.1 first pressing included an outer slipcase used as a storage case for all six volumes. The box back lists the full cast and staff for every episode in a single column — six titles, six heroines, all six episode directors alongside Kitakubo. An Egawa line-art illustration of the complete cast fills the lower half, uncolored. Final credit line: COLOR ILLUSTRATED BY TATSUYA EGAWA / ANIMATION CHARACTER DESIGN BY TOSHIHIRO KAWAMOTO.

Box insert — Egawa color illustration: all six episode heroines assembled in matching red and black outfits. NOT FOR SALE. Came with the Vol.1 first pressing box.
Box insert (reverse) — Kawamoto character settei for the complete series cast. Lavender ink. Multiple heroines in costume variations and head turns. Animation character design by TOSHIHIRO KAWAMOTO. NOT FOR SALE.
NOT FOR SALE
Kawamoto's settei sheets are color-coded across the six volumes: lavender for the complete-cast box insert, coral-red for volume 2, blue for 3 and 4, brown for 5, green for 6. Each sheet is printed at sleeve-insert scale, showing the episode's heroine in costume variants and head turn positions — standard animation reference material. The NOT FOR SALE stamp marks them as production documents released through retail packaging. Kawamoto's character design work on this series preceded his role on Cowboy Bebop (1998) and his co-founding of Studio Bones (2002).

Side B
Each disc's Side B carries a 17-minute making-of feature — one per episode, across all six volumes. The format places supplemental material on the same disc as the episode it documents rather than collecting everything onto a separate bonus disc. The KSS DVD releases (KSXA catalog, 2000 onward) compressed the series onto fewer discs; no source confirms that the per-episode making-of features were carried over.
Vol.3 (JSLA-22668) jacket front — Episode 3「危機/乙女の初恋」. Kintaro on bicycle, large close-up of a woman's face framed by iris flowers. Subdued blue-purple palette.

Vol.4 back — JSLA-22669. Episode 4 stills, tagline: こっちが感じた彼女の野性、身体中ムダのない流線美♥
Vol.4 insert — Egawa color illustration: Ayuko poolside in swimsuit and casual raincoat variant. Named 'Ayuko.' Illustrated by TATSUYA EGAWA.
The Insert System
The per-episode Egawa illustrations are original commissions, not promotional art. Each shows the heroine in two or three poses — one in the episode's context, one more casual — in the clean Super Jump commercial register rather than the looser manga style. The Kawamoto settei on the reverse shows the same character in production terms: multi-angle head turns, costume annotations, the vocabulary of reference material. Two readings of the same character, two different professional registers, on opposing faces of a single sleeve insert.
Vol.4 insert (reverse) — Kawamoto settei for Ayuko (鮎子). Blue ink variant. Full-figure reference with head turns and costume detail. NOT FOR SALE.
Vol.5 (JSLA-22670) jacket front — Episode 5「ノーブレーキの青春」. Reiko in motorcycle racing gear, Kintaro on bicycle in lower corner.
Vol.5 back — JSLA-22670. Episode 5 stills, tagline: もう一度、あの流星に逢わせて下さい、流れ星さま…♥
Vol.5 insert — Egawa color illustration: Reiko in pink racing suit and separate kimono. Named 'Reiko.' Both costumes on one card. Illustrated by TATSUYA EGAWA.
Vol.5 insert (reverse) — Kawamoto settei for Reiko (麗子). Brown ink. Kimono figure, racing costume, facial expressions. NOT FOR SALE.
Vol.6 (JSLA-22671) jacket front — Episode 6「アニメーションは面白い」. Chie large in blue-orange, Kintaro on bicycle. The final episode is set at an animation studio.
Vol.6 back — JSLA-22671. Episode 6 stills, tagline: あきらめちゃダメ♥ 夢、追い続けなきゃ。Full staff credits.
Vol.6 insert — Egawa final illustration: all six episode heroines assembled under the handwritten caption 'Thank you♥'. Every heroine in ordinary clothing. The series goodbye from the original creator. Illustrated by TATSUYA EGAWA.
Vol.6
The final Egawa insert drops the single-heroine format and assembles all six women under a handwritten 'Thank you♥'. The Vol.6 Kawamoto settei on the reverse covers Chie (知絵) in green ink — the last of the six color-coded sheets. The episode title, アニメーションは面白い (Animation is Interesting), is the one where Kintaro's job is working at an anime studio. The insert from the manga artist who created the characters, the settei from the animator who drew them for the screen, on the back of the episode that is explicitly about the production of animation.
Vol.6 insert (reverse) — Kawamoto settei for Chie (知絵). Green ink. Head turns, costume variants, full-figure reference. Animation character design by TOSHIHIRO KAWAMOTO. NOT FOR SALE.
The KSS DVD releases (KSXA catalog, 2000 onward) compressed the series onto fewer discs. Whether the 17-minute per-episode making-of features from Side B were carried into those releases has not been confirmed. The six Egawa heroine illustrations and six Kawamoto settei sheets — twelve inserts across the series, each color-coded, each stamped NOT FOR SALE — appeared in the LaserDisc volumes and have no known subsequent home video appearance.
