Four CAV Volumes

One episode per disc, one disc per volume. Single-sided CAV at 30 minutes allows frame-by-frame access, the same configuration Bandai Visual used for マクロスプラス (BELL-704–707, 1994). Four volumes released over nine months: BEAL-1057 on December 18, 1997; BEAL-1058 on February 25, 1998; BEAL-1059 on May 25, 1998; BEAL-1060 on August 25, 1998. The first two volumes came out roughly two months apart; Vol.3 and Vol.4 each took three months.

First pressings of each volume included a スペシャルセルジャケット: a printed acetate overlay on the front jacket, produced to resemble an animation cel. The questionnaire cards inserted in each volume ask buyers to rate five criteria: 画質 (picture quality), 音質 (audio quality), パッケージデザイン (package design), 解説書 (liner notes), and スペシャルセルジャケット. The final entry is marked 初回生産分のみ (first pressings only).

The Purple Inserts

Each volume includes a folded inner sleeve printed in deep purple throughout, white line art. The content shifts across the four volumes. BEAL-1057's sheet covers the Macross 7 TV cast on one side and the four Zola-original characters on the other. BEAL-1058 continues adding the D7 supporting cast. BEAL-1059's sleeve is the most distinctive of the set. One side (MACROSS-D7 CHARACTERS) covers the Zola setting: Graham's harpoon boat, his Macronized combat form, Elma's auto-bicycle, the Zolan planetary patrol units. The reverse is headed MACROSS-D7 CREATURES: a technical breakdown of the Vahla Ena drawn in the same settei-blueprint format used for the Valkyrie sheets, but applied to the whales. White whale variant, standard variant, ancient space vessel form — all with measurement notations. BEAL-1060's sleeve closes the set with MACROSS-D7 MECHANICS: VF-5000G Star Mirage and VF-19P Excalibur in full construction-sheet format.

Vol.3 inner sleeve, side B: MACROSS-D7 CREATURES. BEAL-1059. Purple field, white line art. 銀河クジラ(白い版)(white variant Galactic Whale). 銀河クジラ(通常版)(standard variant). 銀河クジラの古代宇宙艦 (ancient space vessel form). Anatomical cross-sections, structural detail, scale notations, all with measurement data. The same settei blueprint treatment applied to the Vahla Ena as to the mecha in BEAL-1060. Macross at Fifteen

Macross launched October 3, 1982. BEAL-1057 released December 18, 1997, fifteen years and two and a half months after that premiere. The マクロス15周年記念キャンペーン (Macross 15th Anniversary Campaign) ran October 25, 1997 through April 30, 1998, covering D7 Vol.1 and Vol.2's release windows. Campaign prizes (プラネット・コース): バサラ賞: one original Basara-model guitar; ミレーヌ賞: 30 signed reproduction cels; エルマ賞: 100 oversized posters; ライザ賞: 100 pairs of telephone cards.

The MACROSS SERIES LINEUP insert included with each volume lists every Bandai Visual Macross release: the original TV series (BES-1452–1460, BELL-513–521), 超時空要塞マクロス 愛・おぼえていますか, マクロスプラス (BELL-704–707), マクロス7 (BELL-761–774, BELL-888), the マクロス7 theatrical film, マクロス7アンコール (BELL-866), the 超時空要塞マクロス 15周年記念メモリアルボックス (BELL-1036), and the PlayStation game MACROSS DIGITAL MISSION VF-X. Fifteen years of catalog on one inner sleeve.

Basara at Zola

The Protodeviln War ended in Macross 7 Episode 49, September 1995. D7, set one year after that war, begins with Basara having left the Macross 7 fleet (and the venues where Fire Bomber now plays to packed houses) and wandered to Zola, a frontier planet on the annual migration path of the Vahla Ena. On Zola he meets Elma Hoilie, a Macross 7 fan whose mother was killed on a whale hunt when her father Graham encountered the Great White Galactic Whale and lost his arm. By D7, Graham has Macronized (grown to Zentradi scale) to continue the pursuit. The back cover's English text puts it directly: 'he meets a young girl named ELMA and her father, GRAHAM, who is single-minded in his pursai of a GREAT WHITE GALACTIC WHALE.' The misspelling is on the disc.

The Vahla Ena do not appear in the Macross 7 TV series. They are original to D7. They migrate annually through the Zola system to absorb solar energy, then return to a graveyard site where dying whales generate new ones. In the fourth episode, three dying whales produce three new births while emitting a frequency that lands in range of Basara's voice.

The マクロス7 Blu-ray Box Complete FIRE 2 (BCXA-600, December 21, 2012, ¥67,980) contains all four D7 episodes at 1080p alongside 20 TV episodes and the theatrical film. The streaming releases (Disney+ Japan July 2024, Disney+ international August 2024) have content cuts: several minutes removed across the four episodes covering scenes involving Mylene. BEAL-1057 through BEAL-1060 carry the episodes as produced in 1997 and 1998, before any of that. They also carry what no later release included: the per-volume settei documentation of Zola's creatures and equipment, the 15th anniversary campaign inserts, and the MACROSS SERIES LINEUP printing fifteen years of Bandai Visual Macross product on a single inner sleeve. The Blu-ray box absorbs D7 into a 14-disc retrospective. The LD gives each episode its own disc, its own jacket, and its own monthly installment of the anniversary it was made to celebrate.
