S — Ten CLV Volumes and an Ikuko Itoh Portrait on Every Jacket

Toei Video / Toei Laser Disc CLV, 10 volumes (LSTD-1198–1207) 1995-04-21

S. Ten volumes. Toei Video / Toei Laser Disc. LSTD-1198 through LSTD-1207. April 1995 through late 1995. ¥5,200 per volume. Four episodes per disc. The final volume (LSTD-1207, Vol.10) carries two episodes and is priced at ¥4,000. An outer slipcase holds the complete set. Toei Animation.

Each disc's jacket front is a newly commissioned Ikuko Itoh character illustration printed under the PRETTY SOLDIER SAILOR MOON S title. The subjects rotate through the series' cast in narrative order. Vol.1 covers the complete Inner Senshi assembled; Vol.2 pairs Sailor Mars and Mercury; Vol.3 pairs Sailor Mars and Venus; Vol.4 features Sailor Chibi Moon alone; Vol.5 pairs Sailor Neptune and Uranus; Vol.6 shows Super Sailor Moon following her power-up arc; Vol.7 centers on a dark antagonist figure with Chibi Moon — the series' only villain-centric jacket; Vol.8 assembles all three Outer Senshi; Vol.9 gives Sailor Saturn a solo cover; Vol.10 gathers the complete final-act cast. The outer slipcase front assembles the full series cast across both Inner and Outer Senshi.

Sailor Moon S ran 38 episodes on TV Asahi from March 1994 to February 1995. It was the third season of the franchise and Ikuhara's final as series director — he left the production in late 1995 before the fourth season aired, to develop Revolutionary Girl Utena. Ikuko Itoh served as character designer and chief animation director for all three seasons through S; this is the last season she held both roles simultaneously. The season introduced the Outer Senshi — Uranus, Neptune, Saturn — who had no equivalent in the earlier seasons, and whose presence shifted the series' visual and tonal register considerably from Vol.5 onward.

Toei Laser Disc

Ten volumes, each containing four episodes of the TV broadcast, with the final disc carrying two. The Toei Laser Disc imprint ran through the 1990s as Toei's primary LD distribution label — the cat-silhouette logo appears on the back of every disc in the series. Credits appear in small vertical type at right on the slipcase back: original story Ikuko Itoh. Each individual disc back carries the full per-episode staff and cast in the same format.

The Jacket System

Each jacket front is a commissioned Ikuko Itoh illustration for that volume's specific character assignment — not promotional art adapted from broadcast materials, but drawings made for the disc jackets. The backs follow a consistent format across all ten volumes: STORY text in the left column (four episode synopses with stills), a colored oval carrying the CHAPTER TRACK, staff and cast at right. The chapter track oval changes color slightly per volume — it's the one element of the back that visually distinguishes each disc from the others when they're shelved together.

The Outer Senshi

Vols.5, 8, and 9 are allocated to the characters introduced in Sailor Moon S who had no equivalent in the earlier R season. Sailor Uranus (天王はるか Tenoh Haruka) and Sailor Neptune (海王みちる Kaioh Michiru) appear together on Vol.5 in a composition that reads more like a character study than an action shot — two faces close, no transformation sequence, no attack pose. Vol.8 assembles all three Outers. Vol.9 gives Sailor Saturn a single-figure cover that stands apart from every other volume in the set.

Vol.9

Sailor Saturn is the season's late-appearing character — her true identity as a Sailor Soldier was withheld from the broadcast audience until the penultimate arc, and suppressed in early promotional materials. Vol.9's jacket gives her a single-figure cover: dark palette, isolated in frame, no companions. Every other volume in the set pairs or groups characters, or features Sailor Moon's own power-up arc. The solo framing on Vol.9 is the jacket assignment maintaining the same withholding the narrative does — she is present, but set apart.

Vol.9 (LSTD-1206) jacket front — Sailor Saturn in solo portrait. Purple-blue palette, straight-ahead gaze, Silence Glaive visible. The only single-character jacket in the series that is not Sailor Moon or Chibi Moon. Episodes 122–125. Vol.9 (LSTD-1206) jacket front — Sailor Saturn in solo portrait. The Toei DVD release of Sailor Moon S (2002 Toei Video) compressed the season onto fewer discs with standard menu navigation. The CHAPTER TRACK structure from the LD release — eight to ten named stops per disc, presented in that colored oval on each back cover — provided per-episode navigation keyed to named moments in the broadcast. The ten Ikuko Itoh jacket illustrations were later reproduced across artbooks, merchandise, and anniversary releases; their original context was the disc jackets, commissioned for the LaserDisc volumes and pressed in the season's first broadcast year.
