美少女戦士セーラームーン S — Toei Video's Ten-Volume LaserDisc Set, One Senshi Portrait Per Disc

Toei Video (東映ビデオ) CLV (LSTD01198~LSTD01262) 1995-04-21

美少女戦士セーラームーン S (LSTD01198~LSTD01262, 東映ビデオ, April 21, 1995–January 1996) spans ten CLV LaserDiscs, four episodes each. ¥5,720 per volume. Thirty-eight episodes total across the complete set. An outer box houses all ten discs with a full-cast illustration on its front face.

Sailor Moon S aired on TV Asahi from March 19, 1994 to February 25, 1995. The season introduced three new Sailor Senshi — 天王はるか (Tenoh Haruka / Sailor Uranus), 海王みちる (Kaioh Michiru / Sailor Neptune), and 土萠ほたる (Tomoe Hotaru / Sailor Saturn) — and the Death Busters as the season's antagonist faction, culminating in the awakening of Saturn, Senshi of silence and destruction. The LD series opened two months after the broadcast concluded, releasing one volume per month from April 1995.

Each disc's front cover is a close-cropped character portrait against a dark background: one or two Senshi per volume, no two volumes sharing the same configuration. Vol.1 is Sailor Moon alone; Vol.5 is Haruka and Michiru together; Vol.9 is Sailor Saturn. Each back cover carries episode stills, a plot summary column, and a chapter track listing — marking the individual episodes within the double-sided CLV disc.

Ten Volumes, One Box

The outer box carries a full-cast group illustration that the individual disc sleeves never replicate — the Outer Senshi (Uranus, Neptune, Saturn) and Inner Senshi together in the same frame. On the individual discs, they appear separately: each volume frames one corner of the season, one character or pair at a time.

The back panel of the outer box shows Usagi and Chibi-Usa in a watercolor-adjacent style, standing against a plain ground with the Toei Video logo below. The contrast with the front's dark group composition is deliberate — the box opens on the series' emotional center, not its ensemble.

Haruka and Michiru

Vol.5 is the only disc in the set with a two-character cover that foregrounds their relationship rather than their combat roles. The portrait puts them at the same distance from the lens, shoulder to shoulder, not fighting stances. Every other two-character cover in the series places the Senshi in action configuration. This one doesn't.

The Back Cover Format

All ten back covers follow the same layout: episode stills in a column at left, a plot summary section at center, and a chapter track listing printed in the lower half. The chapter listing marks where each episode begins on the disc — practical navigation data for a format that otherwise requires physical cueing to find a specific episode within 98 continuous minutes of CLV playback.

January 1996

Vol.10 shipped in January 1996, eleven months after Vol.1. The broadcast had concluded the previous February. The LD release ran the full season at one disc per month, matching the original episode pacing closely enough that the monthly rhythm felt deliberate. Complete sets in outer box with all ten obi strips currently sell in the ¥8,000–¥20,000 range depending on condition.

The broadcast finished February 25, 1995. Vol.1 shipped April 21, 1995. By January 1996 the complete season was on disc.

No supplemental materials appear in any source consulted — no booklets, no inserts beyond the obi strips. The set is discs and packaging. The chapter tracks on each back cover are the only navigational concession to a format that otherwise plays continuously from side to side without landmarks.
