Six Volumes
Two CLV discs per volume, eight episodes per disc pair, six volumes released bimonthly across 1993. The TV series ran February 18, 1992 to February 2, 1993; the final LD volume (KILA-64/5) arrived November 26, 1993, ten months after the finale. Vol.6 covers nine episodes (第41〜49話) rather than eight — the series total of 49 does not divide evenly. Each volume is レンタル禁止 (no rental).
CLV, MONO. The broadcast was stereo; the base LD track is standard analog mono. From Vol.2 onward, a portion of each disc carries video extras recorded in stereo from 35mm negative: specific transformation and combination sequences telecined at higher resolution than the TV broadcast print. Vol.2's extras are the Blue Earth ship launch and the initial Tekkaman transformation (early animation version). Vol.3 adds the Pegasus transformation and a Tech-Set scene compilation.
Vol.1 obi, KILA-54/5, blue. DISC I (1〜4話) / DISC II (5〜8話) story text. STAR CHILD.
Vol.1 inner jacket art by 佐山善則 (Sayama Yoshinori). Tekkaman Blade (pink/white) and Tekkaman Evil (dark blue) facing each other across an Earth-orbit frame, beam weapon firing between them. Signed 'By Sayama.' Each volume's inner art is a Sayama original in this format: two Tekkaman in confrontation.
The Guest Gallery
Each volume includes a newly commissioned color illustration by a guest animator, under the heading GUEST GALLERY. The artist and subject change per volume. Vol.1's gallery is by 中原れい (Nakahara Rei, co-mecha designer on the series): a Sol-Tekkaman reconnaissance variant designed for Aki, labeled 「幻(?) The Fermion cannon is replaced with sensor equipment; armoring is reduced; the only weapon is a single-shot needle gun. Handwritten technical notes accompany the illustration. The suit appears nowhere in the 49 episodes.
Vol.3's guest is 鈴木典孝 (Suzuki Noritaka, Studio OX): Blade redrawn as a samurai-armored configuration, titled 「鉄火男無礼道!」(Tekka-Man Musha Version). Each gallery treats the Tekkaman suit as a design space, not a fixed object, and the guest animator re-enters it from their own drawing vocabulary.
Sol-Tekkaman reconnaissance configuration: sensor unit array replaces Fermion cannon, armor reduction, single-shot needle gun. Color illustration with handwritten technical annotations.
「進合宇宙層197X年 — その後のノアル?」(United Space Layer 197X: What happened to Noal?). Noal Freeman in profile (civilian clothes, cropped blond hair) beneath a red Tekkaman mecha in orbit above Earth. In-universe speculation piece: three years after the war, Noal has risen to lieutenant colonel commanding a Tekkaman-equipped unit, Red In team. Story text at upper left in Japanese.
Itano Ichiro built his reputation on missile-spiral sequences in 超時空要塞マクロス (1982): the animation style in which missiles spiral outward in complex three-dimensional formations while a Valkyrie corkscrews through them became associated specifically with him and acquired his name. The Itano Circus appears across Zeta Gundam, Megazone 23 Part II, and Bubblegum Crisis. His Vol.2 contribution is one full-spread color illustration, not animation. He chose an open question (what happened to Noal after the war) and gave it a specific year and a specific promotion. The illustration includes a story paragraph in Japanese describing the postwar political situation and Noal's changed role.
The guest gallery structure assumes that the people who did the work have opinions about the work that didn't fit into production. The illustration commissions are one form of that: animators who handled specific episodes or sequences given a spread to answer the questions the series left open.
STARKNIGHT TEKKAMAN-BLADE variation settei. Six Tekkaman suit configurations labeled A through F. A: Blade standard. B: Evil (red). C: Dagger (green/yellow). D-E: sketch variants. F: blue-scheme suit. Per-suit specifications and design notes. Headed 'Wipe your tears away / D-Boy//'. KILA-54/5 (Vol.1 reference at top).
Vol.2 front jacket, KILA-56/7. March 24, 1993. Full cast portrait against black: D.Boy and Aki center, supporting cast and Tekkaman Evil (background mech). Character-focused composition, no action pose. STARKNIGHT TEKKAMAN-BLADE VOL.2.
Vol.3 front jacket, KILA-58/9. May 21, 1993. D.Boy and Aki in a cave or alien interior, facing the viewer. No armor. STARKNIGHT TEKKAMAN-BLADE VOL.3.
Vol.3 back jacket, KILA-58/9, signed SAYAMA. Tekkaman Omega (pink/lavender) in a circular ornate frame against canyon terrain and moon. Episode list at top: 17. Steel Messiah / 18.
(Tekkaman Broadsheet) is a newspaper-format insert included with each volume: tabloid print on newsprint stock, headed with the series title and the volume number. Its contents are split between reader engagement and in-universe material. The reader-facing half carries fan letters with staff responses, production news, and industry announcements (Vol.3 announces the Tekkaman Blade OVA, the vol.3 insert being one of the earliest confirmations in print). The in-universe half runs two serials: 「ブレードの日記」(Blade's Diary), first-person entries by D.Boy, and 「みゃきちゃんの文芸日記」(Miyuki's Literary Diary) by Miyuki, which in Vol.3 includes a hand-drawn map titled 「ラダムの地球侵略プローグ」(Prologue to Radam's Earth Invasion).
The かわら版 format, named for the woodblock-printed news sheets of the Edo period, frames the supplement as ephemeral information rather than collectible documentation. Each issue is dated, volume-specific, and written as if alongside the broadcast. Vol.1's broadsheet was printed while the series was airing.
Two-page newsprint broadsheet. Left: 「みゃきちゃんの文芸日記③」: Miyuki's Literary Diary, including hand-drawn map 「ラダムの地球侵略プローグ」. Right: fan letters corner 「お友達からのお便りコーナースペシャル」with reader illustrations. Bottom left: 番外NEWS (Galactic Saver announcement).
Vol.2 back jacket, KILA-56/7, signed SAYAMA. Tekkaman Blade (white/pink) and Tekkaman Evil (dark) in a blood-red urban combat scene, skyscrapers dripping crimson. 'GATHERING EIGHT EPISODES.' DISC I: 9. Rescue / 10. Cradlesong at Battlefield / 11. D-File / 12. Evil. DISC II: 13. Destiny / 14. One's Blood Devil / 15. Return to Life Demon / 16. A Strikebreaker.
The Tekkaman Blade Blu-ray BOX (KIZX-90233, King Records, January 27, 2016) contains all 49 episodes plus Tekkaman Blade II (6 OVA episodes), a new interview with 森川智之, and a 40-page booklet. It also includes the LD video bonus footage: the 35mm negative telecine scenes that were, on the original discs, a compensation for the base MONO track. The LD volumes carry what the Blu-ray cannot replicate: six GUEST GALLERY illustrations, the per-volume ㊙ design sheets, and the かわら版 newsletters dated as the series was airing. The Blu-ray is the complete archive. The LD set is twelve discs released bimonthly, each arriving alongside or just after the broadcast it covered, with a guest animator's answer to a question the series hadn't resolved yet.
