トライガン — Thirteen Stages, Thirteen Jackets, and a Fictional Newspaper That Documented Its Own Production

Victor Entertainment CAV (JVLA-58021 through JVLA-58033; 13 individual volumes) 1998–1999

Thirteen CAV discs. JVLA-58021 through JVLA-58033. トライガン (Trigun), a 26-episode television series adapted from Yasuhiro Nightow's manga, animated by Madhouse and broadcast on TV Tokyo from April to September 1998. Victor Entertainment released the series across thirteen individual volumes on LaserDisc, two episodes per disc, CAV format, ¥5,000 for the first and last volumes, ¥5,800 for Stages 2 through 12. Each jacket carries a unique character illustration against a solid color border. Each volume includes a four-page liner insert called the MONTHLY SATELLITE TIMES — a fictional newspaper set on the series' desert planet, containing episode recaps written as in-universe journalism, production settei spreads, hand-drawn staff notes, producer columns, episode previews, and a rotating guest manga artist corner.

Vash the Stampede carries a $$60 billion bounty on his head. He wanders a desert planet — humanity's last colony after Earth became uninhabitable — wearing a red leather coat and carrying a silver revolver. Every town he enters gets destroyed. The insurance company Bernardelli sends two agents, Meryl Stryfe and Milly Thompson, to follow him and minimize the damage claims. What they find is a pacifist. Vash has never killed anyone. The destruction follows him because of what he is, not what he does. The series starts as slapstick comedy — a goofy gunslinger dodging bounty hunters — and darkens steadily as the Gung-Ho Guns, a group of assassins sent by Vash's twin brother Knives, force him toward the violence he refuses. By the final act, the comedy is gone.

Victor Entertainment's LaserDisc release tracked that tonal shift in real time. The MONTHLY SATELLITE TIMES — printed on newsprint-textured paper in a sepia-toned broadsheet format — ran for thirteen issues across thirteen volumes. Each issue's front page carries an English-language headline summarizing the episodes as if reported by the planet's press: 'Felnarl Region was attacked by Extra-large Humanoid Typhoon!!' in Stage 1 becomes 'Tragic Love Story in a Desert' by Stage 6, 'Mystery!? Every resident all of the town was spirited off.' by Stage 12. The headlines darken with the show. The newspaper doesn't know it's fiction.

JVLA-58021. CAV, two sides, approximately 50 minutes — two broadcast episodes per disc. Thirteen volumes covering 26 episodes. Every back cover carries the same English text in italic: 'We are all like raindrops falling from the sky, eventually landing on this sandy star and dirtying from the heat of the sun. Even is protected by a huge umbrella, we never know what tomorrow may bring. Someday we will be blown by the wind and dissolve into the sandy earth.'

Thirteen Jackets, Thirteen Colors

Each volume's jacket pairs one character (or group) with a distinct border color. The sequence tracks the series' emotional arc. Stage 1: Vash in red — the bounty-hunted clown. Stage 2: Meryl in purple — the observer. Stage 3: Milly in gold — warmth. Stages 4 and 5: a bounty hunter in lime green, then Wolfwood in blue-grey — the companion who complicates Vash's pacifism. Stage 6: Legato Bluesummers in pale blue — the first real threat. Stage 7 onward: the Gung-Ho Guns in orange, pink, dark gold — the assassins who force the tonal shift. Stage 9: Vash, Meryl, and Wolfwood lying together in light blue — the last gentle image. Stage 12: the full main cast walking together in sage — the ensemble before the finale. They are not the same person.

The MONTHLY SATELLITE TIMES

Every volume's liner insert is a four-page broadsheet newspaper called the MONTHLY SATELLITE TIMES — thirteen issues total, one per volume. Page 1 carries an English headline summarizing the episodes as in-universe news reportage, with Japanese-language articles recapping the plot as if written by journalists on the planet. Each issue includes scene photographs captioned in English ('A town sunk out of sight in a single night!?' / 'Lovers Who Were Killed by Vash' / 'A pastor was found dead in the church.'). The right column runs a recurring feature by Nightow himself — 'ウスラ漫画家内藤のオレチェキA to Z' — the original manga creator commenting on the adaptation in his own hand-drawn style. Bottom right: 'GOOD TALK by YOSUKE KURODA,' a column by the series' head writer. The headlines alone map the tonal descent: from tabloid excitement to tragedy to mystery to silence.

At the series' midpoint (Episodes 13–14 of 26), the PRODUCTION PREVIEW spread is replaced by a staff roundtable: photographs of the production team, dense columns of conversation. The sepia broadsheet format runs a real production document halfway through the run. The newspaper drops the fiction briefly, then resumes it for six more issues. The Geneon DVD release collected the 26 episodes across nine discs. It did not include the MONTHLY SATELLITE TIMES. No fictional newspaper tracked the tonal descent through headlines that shifted from tabloid slapstick to elegy. No page taught you how to play the opening theme on guitar or diagrammed Vash's revolver as if it were a real weapon.

Victor Entertainment's thirteen CAV volumes document the original broadcast-era production as it happened, two episodes at a time, through a liner insert format that treated each release as an issue of a magazine nobody subscribed to. The MONTHLY SATELLITE TIMES ran for thirteen issues across thirteen volumes, from April 1998 to March 1999.
