Hitzcarraldo is one of the Ten Magnificent members whose name doesn't immediately announce his origin series — he reads as Imagawa's own invention or drawn from a less widely known Yokoyama work. What the series gives him is a role that requires no backstory: absolute commitment to the Earth Defense Force cause, expressed without the weight of Murasame's survivor guilt or Daisaku's inherited burden. He fights because he chooses to.
The Ten Magnificent functions as an ensemble because it has range. The Water Margin characters bring heroic weight and ancient loyalty. Murasame brings survivor's pain. Ginrei brings professional competence. Hitzcarraldo brings style and directness — the member whose motivations require the least excavation. He wants to win. He wants to protect the people he's protecting. He will cut whatever needs to be cut.
In a series that loads almost every character with backstory and moral complication, Hitzcarraldo's clarity is structural. The ensemble needs someone who simply shows up and fights. His theatrical presentation — the suit, the cards, the laconic delivery — is cover for something more straightforward than the show usually allows: he is here because this is where he should be.
- His quote: '手伝ってやろうか?ただし、真っ二つだぞ' — 'Shall I help you out? Just so you know, it'll be cut in two.' The line codes his fighting style (destruction via playing card projectiles, slicing things apart) and his register (generous, dangerous, slightly theatrical). The offer of help and the warning are delivered as a single casual statement.
- The design: a tan suit, distinctive hair swept back, a playing card between his fingers in the color illustration. He looks like a riverboat gambler placed into a war. The visual incongruity is the point — he doesn't dress for apocalypse, and the apocalypse doesn't require him to.
- He shares his anniversary book page with 命の鐘の十常寺 (Juji of the Temple Bell), the Buddhist priest member whose bell resonates with divine force. Two members defined by their objects: Hitzcarraldo's cards and Juji's bell. Both use tools that seem ceremonial and are actually weapons. Juji's quote: '生者必衰、命の鐘の響きあり!' — 'All living things must decline — hear the toll of the bell of fate.'
