公孫勝・清道人 — The Thunder Master from Water Margin

What changes when a medieval sorcerer fights alongside laser weapons and giant robots?

Gongsun Sheng is the sorcerer of the 108 Liangshan outlaws in Water Margin — the character who commands storms and lightning through Taoist practice. In Yokoyama's Suikoden adaptation, that power is presented as genuine: Gongsun Sheng can call down thunder. Imagawa put him in a world where extraordinary abilities are normalized. The Taoist magic and the Shizuma-powered technology exist on the same scale. No one finds him anachronistic.

The Water Margin contingent of the Ten Magnificent makes Imagawa's method visible: he found the characters in Yokoyama's Suikoden who had the most defined abilities, took those abilities seriously, and placed them in a science fiction world that treats them as simply another mode of power. Tetsugyu hits things very hard. Taison can run at impossible speed. Youshi is blue and frightening. Kosonsho commands weather.

None of these abilities are treated as magic requiring explanation. They exist alongside Shizuma Drive technology and Giant Robo's impossible scale in a world where the extraordinary is the ordinary register. The Water Margin characters didn't need to be updated. They needed to be placed.

For example
  • The design: Yamashita Akihiko drew him with the visual language of a Taoist priest — robes, the 清道人 (Pure Way Man) title, a sword, a bagua pattern on his garment. In a cast that includes suits, military uniforms, and elaborate fantasy armor, he reads immediately as the one character whose power comes from a pre-technological tradition. The show treats this as simply a different mode of the extraordinary, not an exception to it.
  • In Water Margin, Gongsun Sheng is one of the rare characters whose loyalty to the Liangshan cause is initially reluctant — he's a hermit who has to be persuaded to join. Imagawa keeps that register of reserve. Kosonsho in Giant Robo is not gregarious. He is present, capable, and carries the Taoist practitioner's composure through situations that make everyone else reactive.
  • His role in the Ten Magnificent is that of the member with the deepest knowledge — of the Shizuma Drive's history, of the forces the BF Dan is drawing on, of what the catastrophe actually was. The thunder master as the keeper of inconvenient truths.
