Zhuge Liang (諸葛亮孔明) is the Chancellor of Han in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms — the figure whose strategic genius is so absolute that he has been a byword for intelligence in East Asian culture for seventeen centuries. Yokoyama's Sangokushi adaptation is among his most famous works. Imagawa took Kongming from that source and placed him in Giant Robo as the BF Dan's strategist, with a knife and a feather fan and the series' most significant cache of withheld knowledge.
Yokoyama's Sangokushi is the most significant manga adaptation of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It ran for sixty volumes from 1971 to 1987 and established the visual templates for Three Kingdoms characters that Japanese popular culture still uses. Zhuge Liang is its most famous figure. Imagawa, building a world from Yokoyama's complete fictional catalog, could not omit him.
What he did with the placement is the interesting choice. Zhuge Liang is on the BF Dan side — the antagonists. The Earth Defense Force fights against the organization whose strategic genius is the most recognizable name in Chinese history. That positioning doesn't resolve. The series asks you to sit with the discomfort of watching a figure you're conditioned to trust working against the people you're conditioned to root for. Both conditionings have grounds. That's the show's point.
- The feather fan (羽扇) is Zhuge Liang's canonical attribute — carried in every historical depiction, every drama adaptation, every manga version. Yamashita Akihiko kept it. In a white suit, with a knife, holding the fan he has always held, he is recognizable to any Japanese viewer before he speaks a single line. The recognition is the point: you know this person is the smartest person in the room before the show tells you.
- His quote from the anniversary book: 'これ何づから、人の心を流し動かすは、策の技なり' — 'From ancient times, what moves and stirs the human heart is the art of strategy.' It lands as a threat, a philosophy, and a statement of method simultaneously. Zhuge Liang in the Three Kingdoms was never simply a soldier. He was a shaper of outcomes through information and positioning.
- The strategic complexity: the BF Dan's cause — exposing the Shizuma Catastrophe — is not evil. The Earth Defense Force's protection of civilization is not corrupt. Zhuge Liang is serving the side that knows the truth and is trying to surface it. His allegiances are not ambiguous to him. What the series makes ambiguous is whether his methods are justified by what he knows.
