Bandai SMP: The Model Kit That Ships with Gum

Premium snap-fit model kits produced by Bandai's candy division. Colour-separated runners, no paint required, articulated joints, combining gimmicks. Lines include Super Sentai mecha (GaoKing, Bio Robo, Victory Robo), Brave Series robots (GaoGaiGar, Might Gaine), Gridman, Mazinkaiser, and Super Robot Wars originals. Each box includes a piece of gum. Price: ¥2,000-5,000+.

Snap-fit, colour-separated mecha model kits that rival Gunpla — classified as candy because there's a piece of gum in the box.

The line launched as Super Minipla in 2016 — "mini" model kits sold through candy channels. In 2021, Bandai rebranded it as SMP: Shokugan Modeling Project. The initials stayed. The ambition scaled dramatically.

A 2026 SMP kit — say, the GaoGaiGar Final set — arrives in a box roughly the size of a premium Gunpla kit. Inside: colour-separated runners of ABS and PS plastic, snap-fit assembly (no glue required), articulated joints, and in the case of combining mecha, fully functional combining gimmicks where multiple kits merge into a larger robot. The engineering is serious. The paint separation is precise. The articulation rivals dedicated action figure lines. The box also contains one (1) piece of flat soda-flavoured gum.

The gum is the legal fiction that makes the product possible. Under Japanese tax law, food products are taxed at 8% versus 10% for general goods. More importantly, food products can be sold on supermarket and convenience store shelves — the most heavily trafficked retail space in Japan. A ¥3,500 SMP kit on a konbini shelf reaches impulse buyers that a ¥3,500 model kit in a hobby shop cannot. The gum exists so the shelf exists.

The quality escalation is real. When Bandai restructured in 2018, creating Bandai Spirits for premium hobby products (Gunpla, Tamashii Nations), the candy division had to differentiate within the same corporate family. Their answer was to push candy-toy engineering to its limit — producing kits that a dedicated modeller would find genuinely satisfying, sold through a channel that a casual buyer would find genuinely accessible. The gum is the bridge between these two audiences.

SMP kits are available in Japan at konbini, hobby shops, and Bandai's own stores. International access via AmiAmi, HLJ, and proxy services. The gum is available in the same box, presumably.
